The Man Who Planted Trees

22 May 2008

‘The Man Who Planted Trees’
the ‘Tree Nurseries of Powys’ that grew them

A captivating adaptation by Puppet State Theatre Company of Jean Giono’s environmental cult classic is going to be at Wyeside on Thursday 22 May at 1.30pm and 7.30pm.

Also taking root at each performance will be Tree Nurseries of Powys (TNP), an initiative, promoting local growers of native trees.
A representative of TNP will be on hand in the foyer, before and after both performances, answering questions about native trees and handing out FREE tree seedlings (complete in compostable eco-bag) to the first 200 visitors.

Tree Nurseries of Powys is a group of 5 local growers who cooperate to promote and sell home-grown native trees across the region, from Libanus, Llanfair Caereinion, Llanidloes, Machynlleth and Newbridge on Wye.

As a group, Tree Nurseries of Powys specialise in growing native trees of certified local provenance (grown from local seed), appropriate for Powys and Mid-Wales.
Planting these, better adapted, local provenance trees, has many environmental, economic and social benefits:

•Their genetic makeup ensures that they are better adapted to local conditions found in Mid-Wales.
•Planting better adapted trees ensures better survival rates, avoiding the costs of replanting.
•They help protect local biodiversity, by flowering at the right time.

Sourcing trees and seeds locally also:

•Reduces transport costs.
•Reduces pollution and climate change impacts.
•Safeguards local employment.

Native trees, local seeds, grown by local people, on show at your local cinema…

….that the way to do it!

Tree Nurseries of Powys began in 2005, with support from Glasu, the Builth Wells-based organisation which helps businesses in Powys develop their ideas for local products.

Glasu is a local partnership, funded by EU LEADER+, Welsh Assembly Governement and Forestry Commission Wales.
