Bluebells under Hazel

Within a native woodland, a shrub layer provides a secondary canopy below larger, more mature trees such as oak and ash. Here, a well established local provenance hazel shrub provides extra shade, important for the survival of the native ground-layer biodiversity, including bluebells, wood anmones, etc.
